Motherland

Born in war-torn Afghanistan, my family fled persecution during the Soviet Invasion. Sponsored by a Baptist church, we began a new life in Virginia, where I found healing and inspiration in rock n' roll. "Motherland" is a song I wrote about a revelation I had during a family reunion. You see, I always felt pangs of sadness when I thought about the war because I felt we had been robbed of our lives in Afghanistan. From what I hear, it was a good life. One night during our family reunion, as I sat among 60 of my kin, feasting and jamming well into the night, the women dancing, the men banging on drums, I realized that my family, in their love and grace, had brought the best parts of our heritage with them. And that night I began writing "Motherland."
